Never Cry Wolf by Farley Mowat
More than a half-century ago the Canadian Wildlife Service assigned the naturalist Farley Mowat to investigate why wolves were killing arctic caribou. Mowat's account of the summer he lived in the frozen tundra alone -- studying the wolf population and developing a deep affection for the wolves (who were of no threat to caribou or man) -- is a work that has become cherished by generations of readers, an indelible record of the myths and magic of wild wolves.

Horses Never Lie by Mark Rashid
In Horses Never Lie, acclaimed horse trainer Mark Rashid breaks new ground by challenging the longstanding belief that a person must become the "alpha leader" in order to work with horses. Instead, Horses Never Lie teaches you how to become a "passive leader" -- a reflection of the kind of horse other members of a herd choose to be around and to follow. It’s a must read for all horse owners who care about their horses and the kind of relationship they have with them.

Modoc by Ralph Helfer
Modoc is the joint biography of a man and an elephant born in a small German circus town on the same day in 1896. Bram was the son of an elephant trainer, Modoc the daughter of his prize performer. The boy and animal grew up devoted to each other. When the Wunderzircus was sold to an American, with no provision to take along the human staff, Bram stowed away on the ship to prevent being separated from his beloved Modoc. A shipwreck off the Indian coast and a sojourn with a maharajah were only the beginning of the pair's incredible adventures. Helfer's emotional retelling of this true-life adventure epic will make pulses race and bring tears to readers' eyes.

Vanishing Tracks: Four Years Among the Snow Leopards of Nepal by Darla Hillard
Accessible only by foot, the Langu Gorge in northwestern Nepal is high, inhospitable terrain broken by cliffs, ridges and gullies, and prime habitat for snow leopards. Here, wildlife biologist Rodney Jackson planned to trap, collar and radio-track these rare, elusive animals; Hillard, then a secretary and now Jackson's wife, accompanied him. Hillard gives us a splendid vicarious adventure that ranges from enduring blizzards with only a tent for shelter to the elation of observing a leopard with cubs. Neither hazardous climbs and river crossings nor acute physical discomfort and mental strain fazed the intrepid Hillard and Jackson. Their four years' work produced data on only five snow leopards, a species whose future is uncertain.

Cats of Thistle Hill by Roger A. Caras
Caras, author of A Celebration of Cats and president of the ASPCA, introduces the menagerie at Thistle Hill, his farm in northern Maryland. Though cats occupy center stage, there are diverting stories about other creatures: Maggie, a donkey who pairs off with Humbolt, a llama; Steakums, a steer rescued from a petting zoo; a 23-year-old cow, an alpaca and a pair of captive-bred macaws. Among the numerous cats and dogs are the cat Xnard, who has appeared in previous books, and Omari, a retriever. Except for the hoofed animals and birds, all the animals have been spayed or neutered. Caras gives practical advice on choosing a cat and dealing with behavior problems. Aileurophiles and pet owners will be captivated by the animals at Thistle Hill.
