Book Terminology

__/__ Denotes book/dustjacket condition (see Condition Definitions)
Dustjacket Separate paper covering for the book (i.e., dj or dustwrapper)
Slipcase Separate container for the book; may be open ended, or folded with a cover (clamshell), and made from any material
Signed Author's signature
Inscribed Author's inscription-- may or may not be to a specific person
Presentation Copy Presented by the author to a specific person--usually copies reserved by the publisher for the author to distribute
Association Copy Inscribed by the author either to someone famous or to someone important in the author's life
LIM.ED.
(LE,LimEd)
A limited edition, sometimes the true 1st edition, usually bound differently than the trade 1st edition, and many times signed & #'d
Ex Lib An ex-library copy, usually with library markings
POI Previous owner's inscription
POS Previous owner's signature
PON Previous owner's name
Spine Slant Spine is not perfectly vertical-- may be mild to severe
Sunning Fading, usually from exposure to sunlight
Closed Tear No material missing
Open Tear Material missing
Chip Not torn, but with material chipped away and missing
PC Dustjacket is price clipped
Foxing Brown spots on binding or text pages, caused by chemicals/method used in making the paper, normally from a reaction with humidity
Shaken Spine/text block connection loose (various degrees--mild to severe
Tender Some looseness or other problem with spine/text block connection
TEG Top page edges gilt
AEG All page edges gilt
FFEP Front free end page (blank page before half-title page)
RFEP Rear free end page (blank page after text)
Ex Libris "Belonging to the library of" a previous owner (usually bookplate or a stamp)
N.D. Not dated (referring to copyright date)
1st Thus 1st edition (after the original printing) with substantial changes
1st Edition 1st edition & 1st printing
Printings 1st printing off the press-- when type-set, was clearer & more easily read, and thus preferred; now synonymous with 1st edition
1st Before Publication When the planned original printing has sold out before the book is published and the publisher prints more copies at that time
Point An error or change which identifies a 1st printing, corrected or changed in later printings
Issue Substantially the same as "point"
BC/BOMC Book Club or Book Of The Month Club edition
